Santa Maria Ship in Madeira
‘Santa
Maria’ is a replica of the Columbus’ ship,
which cruises daily along Madeira’s beautiful
south coast.
Rob Wijntje, a native Dutchman who made Madeira
his and his family’s home had a dream
of building a full-scale replica of Columbus’ ship
for many years. The dream finally came true
in July ‘97 when he started the construction
together with 8 locals in the fishing village Câmara
de Lobos.
No original plans of the ‘Santa Maria’ existed,
so Rob had to find all his knowledge about the Santa
Maria from books and pictures. He has tried to build
this replica as close to the original as possible
under these circumstances. Today’s ‘Santa
Maria’ is
22 meters long, has 3 masts, the tallest of which is
16 meters high, the ship is built entirely of mahogany,
Tthe ‘Santa Maria’ is used
as an excursion boat, cruising twice a day along Madeira’s
south coast. It also takes on special charters. The
ship has space for more than 100 passengers, a bar
as well as sanitary facilities.
During the Santa Maria excursions you will be able
to watch a galleon ship crew (who look
like freindly pirates!!) gong through their daily routine
work whilst you get to enjoy the breathtaking views
over the sea and the island of Madeira. If you are
luckyyou might also get the opportunity
to spot dolphins!
Free Madeira Wine and honey
cake are on offer to passengers during the trip
