Walking and Getting about in Madeira
You really have not seen Madeira if you don't experience
the thrilling landscapes of the island.
And they are all so accessible and easy to find as
well as being often effortless to walk.
Local Tour Companies
One of the best ways to explore Madeira is
to use one of the local tour companies. Their knowledgeable
drivers and guides make for very interesting and
enjoyable tours.
Hire Cars or Taxi
Are also a convenient way of getting round the island. All taxi
drivers carry government-approved price lists for
journeys outside Funchal, but don't be afraid
to barter! Some of the drivers are
knowledgeable about the island’s culture
and customs and some are keen walkers.
Coach tours
Are also a popular way of seeing
Madeira in a day. They provide an introduction
to road conditions and remarkable views of island
scenery. You can discover in comfort the landscapes
you want to explore later on your own.
Buses
The bus system
is economical, reliable and fun! You benefit from splendid
views sitting high up on bus seats and most of the
buses are new and quite comfortable. You’ll
feel safe in the drivers hands.
The two largest
bus operators, SAM and Rodoeste,
have bus stations. SAM's is fairly convenient, BUT Rodoeste's
is not! Most people catch SAM and Rodoeste buses at
their main departure points on the Avenida do Mar and
buy tickets on the bus. Other country bus tickets
(EACL, ECCL, SR do Faial) are bought at the
operators kiosks near the bus departure points.
Orange town buses have fare-saving tickets available.
Arrive early for your bus!
It may take you a while to find the one you
want and they leave on time!
